We have recently rescued and refurbished a traditional local Fishing Coble built in 1963 to help us select and harvest the best sea water - all the abundant sea life can't be wrong.

You will sea SEASALT regularly leaving Whitby Harbour to harvest the sea salt which in turn will help us to preserve this valuable, traditional wooden fishing boat for generations to come.

Sea Salt

All life has evolved to depend on the salts properties to survive. Salt has been used by humans for thousands of years, from seasoning to food preservation. It is essential for our bodies, aiding both our nerve and muscle function.

- We can't live without salt -

Throughout history salt has been pivotal to civilisation; it was such a scarce and expensive commodity with its value legendary. The Roman army were often paid in salt instead of money. Their monthly wage was called salarium and 'sal' in Latin translates to salt; this eventually made it into the English language as the word salary. However it wasn't the Romans that brought salt to Britain, salt was well established in Britain, predominantly along the coast, with many salt roads being present from as early as the bronze age.
Towns and cities in Britain ending in 'wich' were named this to indicate that they were sources of salt, such as Middlewich, Sandwich and Northwich.

With salt being such a highly valued commodity, it would indicate your social ranking at the dinner table. To be seated above or below the salt would identify your ranking according to your host. Be sure to check where you're seated next time you're invited to a dinner party.

Fish 'n' Chips - Salt 'n' Vinegar - Made in Britain

Fish and chips originated in England and first appeared in the early 1860’s and by 1910 there were over 25,000 fish and chip shops and by 1930’s over 35,000. The first fish 'n' chip shop or ‘chippy’ opened in Mossley Lancashire by Mr Lees in 1863 although there are sources that suggest there was one that opened up in London in 1860.
The importance of Fish ‘n’ Chips and thus Salt ‘n’ Vinegar to the British is shown during WW1 and WW2 when the British Government safeguarded the supply of fish ‘n’ chips, it was one of the few foods in Britain not subjected to rationing during the wars. Prime Minister Winston Churchill referred to the combination of fish and chips as “the good companions.” “The cabinet knew it was vital to keep families on the home front in good heart.”

'Proper' Vinegar

Our Whitby ‘Proper’ Vinegar is brewed using the same process as making beer using malted barley, made as it should be.

- The ‘proper stuff’ for your fish ‘n’ chips. -

It’s an often forgotten secret weapon in the kitchen using its own chemistry to lift and enhance flavours. Our Whitby ‘Proper’ Vinegar was developed alongside our sea salt to compliment and enhance flavours in a location we believe has the best fish ‘n’ chips in Britain - Whitby.
There are many recipes out there that use malt vinegar but we have our own favourites that we class as the perfect seaside dish, prepared with Whitby Sea Salt and of course Whitby ‘Proper’ Vinegar. To be eaten on the fantastic beaches of Whitby.
Many vinegar's you see and use in cafes and fish 'n' chip shops is non brewed condiment. Its not ‘proper’ vinegar!! Non brewed condiment is a malt vinegar substitute, acetic acid mixed with colouring's and flavourings, making its manufacture a much quicker process and cheaper than the production of ‘proper’ malt vinegar. Check out this video -
